Decorative Arts Symposium

Tonight I am attending the first in a series of four lectures on the Decorative Arts. This annual symposium is organized by the Alliance Française of Chicago and brings in experts to lecture on a series topic. The 2009 symposium is titled: Les Maisons Françaises de Luxe: Lalique, Van Cleef & Arpels and Chanel.

Tonight is a special lecture followed by dinner tracing the history of the development of the luxury goods market in Paris from the 17th to 19th century, identifying the differnt districts of trade: goldsmiths near the Seine, furniture in Faubourd St. Antoine, antique dealers in St. Germain de Pres and high fashion on the Champs-Elysee and Faubourg St. Honoré.

When I was in college I interned, then worked at the Alliance and in my final months helped to organize the Decorative Arts series… yet I never attended the lectures! I’malso in the middle of studying the various aspects of the French design world in the 16th and 17th centuries, so this should be interesting… I’ll post a recap tomorrow!

If you are interested in attending the remaining three lectures, visit the Alliance Française website for details (click here).
