Trimming and tassels – passementerie!

06Nov10

It wasn’t until working with a design firm with a particularly French aesthetic that I began to appreciate trims. From the simple and modern to the super extraveagent or traditional, a little bit of trim can utterly transform a project. A plain pillow can suddenly have some extra punch. The top or sides of your draperies can have a bit more elegance… the options are endless.

What is most exciting about passementerie, the French word for these trimmings, is how creative you can get in their application. Trim doesn’t need to only happen at the top of a drapery, as a tassle tie back or down the side seam of a pillow!

Obviously, there are many, many sources to find beautiful unique trims. There are plently of fabric stores that stock quality product.. but, I still am always draw to what the French company Houles offers (eek.. excuse the missing accent!).

Some of my favorites for today:

They even offer great pieces of hardware!

Available through Houles directly or in Chicago at Brunschwig & Fils. Take the time to see the each of the collections.. the array of styles and colors is fantastic.
