Ruben Toledo & the Penguin Classics Series

19Jan11

There is no doubt, these books are art.

If you follow my tweets you know that every once in a while I (again) happen upon the series of Penguin Classics books that have ink, pen and watercolour drawn cover art. Each and every time I see these editions, I fall in love all over again.

Just like any feature of a room, the way the cover of a book looks is important. Penguin hit the mark with their collaboration with Ruben Toledo! These moody, beautiful drawings make you want to pick up the book and devour it… even if it’s not your typical cup of tea.

Born in Havana, Cuba, Toledo is most well-known as a fashion illustrator and artist with his hand in many pots. He is at once a painter, sculptor and illustrator, surrealist, critic and fashion chronicler. His body of wok spans all forms: illustrations, window designs, textiles, award statuettes, album covers and carpets. His works have appeared in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Town & Country, The New Yorker, Paper and Visionnaire. Are you familiar with the annual Nordstrom illustrated ad campaign? That’s Toledo as well.

Even the inner flaps (both front & back) and the back covers are beautifully drawn.. I’ll leave you to discover those!

These couture inspired covers will definately put you in the mood for reading. Visit pengiun.com or your local bookstore to purchase… even many independent bookstores are now featuring these beauties. Enjoy!
